the memory stack : from identity to intelligence
memory is how we become who we are. it's also the next frontier in how machines understand us. i’ve been reading and thinking a lot about this lately - untangling some of those thoughts here, across neuroscience, AI research and lived experience.
How Machines Remember
Looking at machine memory from the current architectures to the stakes: how these systems store and structure what we tell them, where they fall short of meaning and what happens when the version they build of us starts shaping who we are.
We Are Our Memories
My grandfather shaped the trajectory of my life in ways he never got to see. So I think about him a lot. In his prime, he was a man of precision. In his final years, he would forget — unable to recognize loved ones sitting around him. I often wonder: who are we when we lose access to our memories?
